Ademola Lookman has lauded his growing partnership with Victor Osimhen following Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 victory against Tunisia at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Fez on Saturday.
The hard-fought win confirmed the Super Eagles’ qualification to the Round of 16 and maintained their perfect record in Group C.
Lookman starred in the encounter, scoring once and providing two assists as Nigeria built a commanding 3-0 lead before withstanding a late surge from the Carthage Eagles.
Reflecting on the performance, Lookman emphasised the importance of results over individual flair at this stage of the tournament:
“We are pleased with the performance today, three points on board, that is most important. We take the positives and carry on,” he said.
A standout feature of the match was Lookman’s connection with Osimhen, which continues to trouble opposing defences. The forward explained that their on-field understanding allows him to adapt his role for the benefit of the team:
“Victor is a good striker and we have a good relationship and make the most of that. Anywhere I can help the team I do. I now play closer to goal, which gives me more chance to hurt the opponent and I am happy with that.”
Nigeria appeared in full control after racing into a 3-0 lead, but late goals from Montassar Talbi and Ali Abdi provided Tunisia with renewed hope, forcing the Super Eagles to dig deep in the closing stages.
Lookman’s influence was evident throughout the match. He set up the opener just before half-time with a teasing cross from the left that Osimhen converted with a powerful header. Early in the second half, another precise Lookman delivery from a corner was headed home by Wilfred Ndidi, and he sealed his night in the 66th minute, finishing a clever cut-back from Osimhen with a left-footed strike.
The goal continued Lookman’s remarkable AFCON record: eight goal contributions—five goals and three assists—in his last nine tournament matches, a return unmatched over the past two editions.
The win leaves Nigeria atop Group C with six points. They will close their group campaign against Uganda in Fez on Tuesday, while Tunisia, on three points, travel to Rabat to face Tanzania.
