The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on Abia State Governor Alex Otti to formally align with the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging him to stop maintaining a neutral stance if he truly intends to support President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 political cycle.
Kalu made the appeal on Monday while addressing party members and supporters at a town hall meeting and food distribution event held at his country home in Bende, Abia State.
According to the Deputy Speaker, Governor Otti would enjoy the backing of APC members across Abia State if he defects to the ruling party, emphasizing that President Tinubu would not extend political support to anyone outside the APC.
“I want to once again invite Governor Alex Otti to join our party,” Kalu said. “If he becomes a member of the APC, we will stand solidly behind him. But you cannot claim to be supporting the President while remaining in another party—that is not acceptable.”
He stressed that genuine support for the president must be demonstrated through party membership, noting that Tinubu would not abandon the APC to endorse or assist a non-member.
Addressing speculation about his own political future, Kalu clarified that he has not yet declared an intention to contest the 2027 Abia State governorship election. He explained that he is still consulting widely, engaging with the APC’s national leadership, and awaiting clear direction from the party.
“If you truly want to work for the President, then join the APC,” he reiterated. “The President will remain in the APC and will not support someone from outside the party.”
Kalu also raised concerns over persistent online attacks against him, alleging that paid social media operatives in Abia State have been targeting him daily.
He added that his empowerment initiatives and community-based programs have been deliberately misrepresented as early moves toward a 2027 governorship ambition, describing the narrative as misleading.
