President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sympathy to British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua following a tragic road accident in Ogun State that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer’s close companions.
The fatal incident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as Joshua travelled with friends who had accompanied him to Nigeria for the New Year holidays. Two men identified as Latif, fondly known as Latz, and Sina lost their lives in the crash.
Latif was Joshua’s longtime personal trainer, while Sina served as his strength and conditioning coach. Reports indicate that both men were seated in the front of the vehicle when the accident happened. Joshua, who was seated in the rear, survived the crash but sustained injuries.
In a condolence message issued on Monday, President Tinubu described the incident as a painful loss and commended Joshua for his character, resilience, and contributions to national pride.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to you over the tragic accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two valuable lives and left you injured,” Tinubu said.
“This heartbreaking event has cast a shadow over what should have been a season of joy.”
The president further expressed solidarity with Joshua and his family as they come to terms with the emotional toll of the tragedy.
“My thoughts are with you and your loved ones as you endure this painful moment,” he said. “You have consistently demonstrated courage, discipline, and a deep love for our country—qualities that have made you a symbol of pride to Nigerians.”
Tinubu urged unity and compassion in moments of loss, stressing the importance of collective support during difficult times.
“In times like these, we must stand together as one people with a shared destiny,” he added.
The president concluded by offering prayers for Joshua’s recovery and for the souls of the deceased.
“I pray that God grants you strength, wisdom, and comfort during this difficult period. May He also grant you a speedy recovery and eternal rest to the departed.”
