AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Receive Enhanced Round of 16 Bonus; Chukwueze Shares Humorous Take on Morocco Weather

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will each receive $30,000 for advancing to the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following renewed negotiations with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

According to ScoreNigeria, the players had initially rejected an offer of $15,000 per player. After further discussions, the bonus was increased to $30,000—an improvement over the previous AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire. Both parties have also agreed on incentive packages for the later stages of the tournament.

Nigeria secured their spot in the knockout rounds with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Tunisia on Saturday, December 27, leaving one group game to play. Eric Chelle’s squad is set to face Uganda in their final Group C fixture at 5 p.m. (WAT) today.

Amid preparations, winger Samuel Chukwueze lightened the mood by joking about the Moroccan climate.

“I don’t like this weather [in Morocco], it’s like London,” Chukwueze told teammate Alex Iwobi during a team walk.

“But you like London?” Iwobi asked.

Chukwueze replied with a grin, “My guy, with the weather in London, you can at least see the bright future.”

Nigeria has made a strong start to AFCON 2025, topping Group C with six points after wins against Tanzania and Tunisia.
