The internal rift within the Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has intensified following the emergence of Abdullahi Zubairu Imam Abiya as the party’s Acting State Chairman.

Abiya’s appointment comes in the wake of the removal of the former state chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, whose position reportedly became untenable after he was rejected and removed at the ward level.

The decision to appoint an acting chairman was ratified by the NNPP State Executive Committee during an emergency meeting convened at the party’s secretariat in Kano.

Speaking on the development, the party’s Assistant Legal Adviser, Barrister Yusuf Mukhtar, said Abiya’s emergence followed the provisions of the NNPP constitution and was carried out in line with established procedures. He added that the State Executive Committee acted within its powers after carefully reviewing the circumstances surrounding the leadership change.

Sources within the party disclosed that the move followed a formal resolution submitted by the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Executive Committee, which recommended the removal and expulsion of Dungurawa from the party.

Earlier, the Dawakin Tofa executive body, under the leadership of Hon. Abdullahi Ali Uban Iya Dawanau, had forwarded a resolution from the Gargari Ward Executive Committee to the state party leadership. The resolution was adopted during the ward’s second executive meeting, held two weeks after the general election.

Ward officials alleged that Dungurawa was involved in activities deemed contrary to party interests, prompting calls for disciplinary action. After assessing the report and its recommendations, the State Executive Committee endorsed the decision and approved Abiya’s appointment as Acting State Chairman.

Party insiders explained that the leadership change was intended to restore internal discipline, promote unity among members, and reposition the NNPP for future political engagements in Kano State.

Reacting to his appointment, Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Imam Abiya assured party members of fairness, inclusiveness, and stability under his leadership. He pledged loyalty to the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, while promising to consolidate the party’s achievements ahead of upcoming political contests.
