Former 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially resigned from the party, announcing his new political alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The announcement was made on Wednesday in Enugu State, where Obi was joined by several influential political figures from the South-East region who also pledged their support to the ADC.

According to Obi and the accompanying leaders, the decision stems from a collective goal to challenge what they described as years of mismanagement under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and to reposition Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.

Addressing the gathering, Obi called on opposition stakeholders nationwide to set aside differences and rally behind the ADC, which is currently led by former Senate President David Mark. He emphasized that a unified opposition is essential for steering the country away from its current political and economic challenges.

Obi expressed hope that the next year would mark the beginning of a national recovery, underscoring the importance of safeguarding the integrity of the 2027 elections. He also vowed that any attempts to manipulate the polls would be countered through lawful and democratic measures.

Describing Nigeria as being in deep crisis, Obi warned that citizens who genuinely care about the country’s future cannot remain passive while governance continues to decline. He criticized a political culture that tolerates substandard leadership and excuses accountability failures as pre-election or technical issues.

The former presidential candidate stressed the importance of ethical leadership, stating that public officials must exercise restraint and personal sacrifice rather than enjoying privileges while imposing hardship on the populace. “A leader must show restraint,” he said, noting that leading by example is the foundation of good governance.

On Nigeria’s economic situation, Obi argued that the nation’s struggles are not due to a lack of resources but rather decades of corruption and mismanagement, which have prevented the country from reaching its full potential on the global stage. He concluded by warning that Nigeria’s international reputation has suffered and called for urgent, collective action to restore the country’s standing.

Prominent figures at the defection event included ADC National Chairman David Mark; former governors Achike Udenwa (Imo State) and Okwesilieze Nwodo (Enugu State); Chief Onyema Ugochukwu; Senators Ben Obi, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Tony Nwoye, and Victor Umeh; along with numerous political leaders from the South-East.
