Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has formally resigned from the party and aligned himself with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obi made the declaration on Wednesday in Enugu State, where he was joined by several prominent political figures from the South-East geopolitical zone who also announced their decision to pitch their tent with the ADC.

Explaining the move, the leaders said their decision was driven by a shared desire to confront what they described as years of poor governance under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and to reposition the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the event, Obi urged opposition stakeholders across the country to set aside differences and unite under the ADC platform, which he noted is currently led by former Senate President, David Mark. According to him, only a united opposition can effectively steer Nigeria away from its current challenges.

Obi expressed optimism that the coming year would mark the beginning of a national recovery process, stressing that efforts must be intensified to protect the integrity of future elections.

He further vowed that any attempt to manipulate the 2027 polls would be resisted through lawful and democratic means.

Describing Nigeria as a nation in deep trouble, Obi argued that citizens with genuine concern for the country’s future can no longer afford to remain passive while governance continues to decline.

He criticized a political system that, in his view, allows questionable leadership standards to persist, lamenting situations where accountability issues are dismissed as technical or pre-election matters.

Obi also emphasized the importance of ethical leadership, stating that those in power must demonstrate restraint and personal sacrifice rather than enjoying excess while demanding hardship from the populace.

“A leader must show restraint,” he said, adding that leadership by example remains the foundation of good governance.

According to Obi, Nigeria’s economic challenges are not a result of a lack of resources, but of years of mismanagement and corruption. He noted that the country has fallen short of its potential on the global stage.

He concluded by warning that Nigeria’s reputation has suffered significantly, describing the country as a nation in distress and urging urgent collective action to restore its standing.

Dignitaries present at the defection ceremony included ADC National Chairman David Mark; former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa; former Enugu State Governor Okwesilieze Nwodo; Chief Onyema Ugochukwu; Senators Ben Obi, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Tony Nwoye, and Victor Umeh, alongside numerous political leaders from the South-East.
