Raphael Onyedika was all smiles after Nigeria’s 3-1 triumph over Uganda on Tuesday night, celebrating not only the team’s Group C win but also his remarkable on-field chemistry with Samuel Chukwueze. The pair’s connection proved pivotal once again at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Onyedika netted two goals in the second half, both assisted by Chukwueze, while Paul Onuachu also scored, helping head coach Éric Chelle guide the Super Eagles to a convincing victory.
After the match, Onyedika praised his teammate’s contributions, humorously admitting that he now owes Chukwueze a gift. “I need to buy Samuel Chukwueze a gift. All my three Super Eagles goals came from his assists. A few years ago, I never imagined this moment,” he remarked.
The Club Brugge midfielder’s outstanding display earned him the Man of the Match award, a fitting tribute to his energy, timing, and composure on the pitch.
Discussing the goals, Onyedika highlighted that their understanding is the product of hard work in training. “It’s exactly what we train for; it’s just a matter of seconds. You have to make a decision, and sometimes it doesn’t happen right away, but you just have to be ready,” he explained.
He added, “I know Samuel really well, and every time he dribbles, he looks for the first person and then cuts back. I try to stay in that position as much as I can, and today I was in a good spot again.”
Onyedika also shared the joy of receiving individual recognition at Fez Stadium, reflecting on his journey. “I feel really happy and I can’t explain why. This is the moment I’ve been working for my whole life, and I’m really happy it finally happened,” he said.
