Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has revealed the emotional struggle that nearly forced him to step away from football, following the devastating loss of both his parents within a short period.
In an interview with ACLSports on Wednesday, the 27-year-old spoke candidly about the grief that engulfed him after losing his mother just two months after the death of his father. The tragedies left him questioning his purpose, his strength, and his future in the sport.
“I don’t want to talk about my parents because tomorrow should be crossover night. Yeah, today actually. My mom died around two o’clock today. I try to keep a lot of things to myself, try to move on, try to be stronger,” Nwabali shared.
The Super Eagles shot-stopper admitted that the weight of the double loss often felt unbearable. “Most times I feel like quitting, you know? Because of mom and dad. My mom was so dear to me. Really, it’s so painful. It’s really hard talking about my mom today,” he added.
Nwabali described the impact of losing both parents in such quick succession as a pain that went far beyond football. “It hurts. Yeah, it really hurts. I try not to dwell on it, but now I’m here. It’s not a nice feeling—not just for a soccer player, but for any human being—to lose both parents at the same time,” he said.
Gossip News Now reports that Nwabali lost his father in November 2025, a heartbreak compounded when he announced the passing of his mother on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2026, on social media. “RIP mom, worst year of my life already,” he wrote, accompanied by tears and heartbreak emojis.
Despite the overwhelming grief, Nwabali credited his teammates for helping him stay in football when he felt like walking away. “I’m standing here playing football. I could remember telling my captain I wanted to leave the game. But with the help of some teammates, I keep going. It really hurts, but I’m still here,” he said.
