Security forces in Borno State have successfully intercepted a suspected suicide bomber, seizing materials believed to be intended for making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), in a preemptive operation that prevented a potential attack.
The arrest took place on Monday, December 29, in Bama Local Government Area. The suspect, identified as Abubakar Mustapha, was apprehended by troops of the 152 Task Force Battalion working in coordination with other security agencies.
Lt. Col. Sani Uba, Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force, North-East Operation Hadin Kai, confirmed on Tuesday that Mustapha was intercepted at the Banki Central Mosque. Authorities discovered that he was in possession of primed IED components, raising fears that an imminent suicide attack was being planned.
Investigations so far indicate that Mustapha is a local of Bama LGA and has connections to additional materials linked to terrorist operations. Security forces are conducting detailed interrogations to uncover his sponsors, collaborators, and potential links to broader terrorist networks in the North-East.
Lt. Col. Uba reassured residents that the Joint Task Force remains vigilant, conducting regular patrols and intelligence-led missions to prevent attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure. He emphasized that the military maintains a strong presence across the region to deter threats effectively.
The officer further called on members of the public to assist security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence, which would help strengthen counter-terrorism operations.
He also highlighted that troop morale and operational capacity remain high, as forces continue targeted actions across Borno and neighboring states to safeguard communities.
This arrest comes shortly after a deadly suicide bombing at the Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, on December 24, which claimed the lives of five worshippers and left 35 others injured, underscoring ongoing security challenges in the region.
