Terror struck Ipele-Owo in Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State, on Wednesday night when suspected bandits attacked and burned down the local police station, leaving residents in fear.
The incident reportedly occurred around 10:00 pm, just as many Christian residents were preparing for cross-over church services to welcome the New Year. Heavy gunfire erupted during the assault, forcing civilians and security personnel alike to flee for safety.
Eyewitnesses described the attackers, estimated to be around 20 in number, as executing a coordinated, commando-style operation. They reportedly moved through the community firing sporadically before targeting the Ipele Police Divisional Station.
“It was a terrorist-style attack. About 20 armed men came into the community shooting everywhere before attacking the police station,” said a local resident who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The witness added that the intensity of the gunfire created widespread panic, prompting many residents to hide in nearby bushes to escape the violence. “The sounds were terrifying. No one could withstand it, so we all fled for safety,” the source explained.
Confirming the incident, Ondo State Police Command spokesperson Jimoh Abayomi acknowledged that the attack occurred but noted that full details were still being compiled. “Yes, it happened. We are gathering details and will provide a comprehensive update,” he stated.
In the aftermath, security operatives were deployed to the area to restore order and secure the community. Investigations into the attack are ongoing as authorities work to determine the perpetrators and prevent further incidents.
