A wave of fear has swept through Aafin community in Kwara State after armed assailants carried out a daring invasion of a royal residence, abducting a traditional ruler and his son. The disturbing incident unfolded in Ifelodun Local Government Area, leaving residents shaken and raising fresh concerns about security in the region.
The victims, identified as Oba S.Y. Olaonipekun and his son Olaolu Olaonipekun, were reportedly taken during the late-evening raid. Armed attackers stormed the palace, firing shots to overpower anyone within the vicinity before forcefully gaining access to the building.
Amid the chaos, the monarch’s wife, Felicia Olaonipekun, sustained a gunshot injury to her arm. Although she escaped abduction, she required immediate medical attention and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Residents described the operation as swift and calculated. Suspicious movements had reportedly been noticed around the palace shortly before the attack, prompting some precautionary actions. However, once the intruders realized their presence had been detected, they intensified their assault, creating panic across the area.
In a separate account, a witness explained that the attackers specifically demanded to see the monarch. After locating him, they took him away alongside his son, who had attempted to remain out of sight. The attackers reportedly focused solely on the palace, avoiding other buildings in the community.
At the time of the invasion, several individuals were inside the residence, having gathered for New Year celebrations. Local security support proved insufficient, as only a small number of vigilantes were on duty and unable to confront the heavily armed group.
