The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that the evaluation of recent United States airstrikes, carried out in coordination with Nigerian forces in Sokoto, is still underway.

Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, made the disclosure on Wednesday while briefing journalists in Abuja. He assured that the findings from the assessment would be made public once the process is completed.

Responding to questions about the effectiveness of the joint operation, Onoja explained, “Regarding the United States strikes conducted alongside Nigerian forces, a thorough battle damage assessment is ongoing. Once concluded, we will share all our observations with the public.”

On reports concerning terrorist activity in the targeted areas, Onoja confirmed that intelligence had established their presence prior to the strikes. He noted that details were not publicly disclosed due to operational security considerations.

“The terrorists were confirmed to be in these locations,” he said. “Sokoto’s proximity to the Sahel region makes it a strategic area. The strikes were carefully planned based on credible intelligence.”

Onoja added that the military continues to monitor terrorist movements closely, coordinating with local commanders to prevent insurgents from infiltrating communities.

“We are tracking them and taking necessary measures, working with all force commanders to ensure these elements do not integrate into communities and cause further harm,” he stated.

The general also called on civilians to support security agencies by sharing information, describing the effort as a “whole-of-society” approach to security.

“The reality is that security can only be maintained when every member of society plays their part,” he added.

Addressing criticism of the joint operation, Onoja emphasized that the Armed Forces would remain focused on operational objectives rather than public opinion.

“It is not the role of the Armed Forces to respond to every differing view in the media. Our priority is to concentrate on our kinetic operations,” he said.

He also urged anyone in possession of ammunition fragments or materials from the operation site to hand them over to the military or security agencies to prevent potential hazards.

“We don’t expect civilians to keep such materials. They should be returned so we can safely disarm them before any harm occurs,” Onoja warned.

He concluded by reaffirming the military’s commitment to continuing operations against terrorist groups as Nigeria enters the new year.
