A tragic fire has claimed multiple lives and left several others injured during a New Year’s celebration at an Alpine ski resort in southern Switzerland.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Crans-Montana, a renowned luxury holiday destination in the canton of Valais, CNN reports.

Valais police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion confirmed that the fire broke out at approximately 1:30 a.m. at the Le Constellation lounge bar.

“This morning, January 1, 2026, a fire erupted around 1:30 a.m. at Le Constellation lounge bar in Crans-Montana, in the canton of Valais,” Lathion said. “Several people have been injured, and there are also multiple fatalities.”

The exact number of casualties has not yet been disclosed, as investigations are ongoing. Emergency responders remain on the scene, and the cause of the fire has not been determined.

Authorities indicated that further updates would be shared later in the day. A joint press briefing involving police officials and the canton’s public prosecutor is scheduled for around 10 a.m. local time.

Crans-Montana is famous for its high-end ski resorts and draws thousands of visitors annually, particularly during the holiday season, making this tragedy a major shock to the community and tourists alike.
