The Palace of the Oba of Benin has clearly stated that it had no involvement in, nor approval of, the recent attack on media personality Don Pedro Obaseki, which reportedly occurred after remarks he made at an event in the United Kingdom linked to former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.
This clarification was contained in an official statement issued on Wednesday by the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), Frank Irabor. He firmly dissociated the revered monarch, His Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, from the incident.
According to the council, the assault stands in direct contradiction to the values and disposition of the Oba of Benin, who is widely regarded as a unifying and peace-loving leader. The statement stressed that such conduct could not, under any circumstance, have originated from or been sanctioned by the palace.
The BTC also used the opportunity to caution youths against resorting to self-help or violence, regardless of provocation. It emphasized that grievances should always be addressed through lawful means and by allowing security agencies to carry out their responsibilities.
In addition, the council advised members of the public, especially social media users, to exercise restraint and responsibility by verifying information before sharing it, in order to curb the spread of false or misleading narratives.
The statement concluded with the Oba of Benin extending New Year goodwill to the general public, while once again affirming his dedication to peace, unity, and harmonious coexistence among all people.
