Stay Clear of Rivers Politics I Won’t Be Politically Buried — Wike Cautions Ateke Tom

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned Ateke Tom, the first Amanyanabo of Okochiri Kingdom, against participating in political affairs in Rivers State.

During a courtesy visit to the monarch’s palace in Okrika Local Government Area—part of Wike’s ongoing “thank you” tour of local governments—the former Rivers governor stressed that his visit was rooted in their personal relationship, not politics. He reminded the traditional ruler that major political decisions in the state have already been made and that stability within the kingdom must be maintained.

Wike advised Ateke Tom to remain neutral as political activities escalate across Rivers State, urging him to avoid public involvement in partisan matters. “Politics will soon begin, but I am not asking you to be part of it. Remain in your role as a traditional ruler and allow us to play our political game,” he said.

He emphasized that personal opinions were natural but warned against any actions that might be perceived as political interference. “Don’t put your hands in it. You may have your own views privately, but publicly, stay out and let us handle our affairs,” Wike added.

The minister clarified that while the monarch could step in to restore peace if necessary, political disputes should be resolved by the parties involved. “If any issue arises, you can call us and we will resolve it. But I want you to know that it will not be business as usual again,” he warned.

Speaking to the people of Okrika separately, Wike expressed gratitude for their steadfast support over the years, particularly from the wider Ijaw nation. “We came to appreciate our people who have stood by us over the years. The people of Okrika and the Ijaw nation have supported us immensely, and I felt it was important to personally thank them,” he said, assuring them that their loyalty would not be overlooked.

Wike also highlighted his determination to remain politically relevant in Rivers State, declaring that he would not allow himself to be sidelined. “We have all taken a clear decision on what to do. Those who are close to you will explain it to you — not for participation, just for awareness. You are my friend,” he concluded.
