“You Didn’t Finish University, Yet You Call Me Semi-Illiterate” — Wike Fires Back at Ohanaeze Leader

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has strongly responded to comments made by Ohanaeze Ndigbo President-General, John Mbata, who referred to him as “semi-illiterate.”

Speaking to supporters in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) Local Government Area of Rivers State on Friday, Wike questioned Mbata’s academic background, highlighting that the Ohanaeze leader did not complete his law programme at Rivers State University.

“Normally, I wouldn’t respond, but I must speak,” Wike stated. “A former senator dared call me semi-illiterate, yet he himself dropped out of Rivers State University while studying law. He couldn’t complete his programme.”

Contrasting his own credentials, Wike noted that he graduated from the University of Port Harcourt, obtained another degree from Rivers State University, attended law school, and is now a Life Bencher. “The so-called semi-illiterate went to university, finished properly, went to law school, and today holds the fourth-highest national honour in Nigeria,” he added.

Wike also addressed recent claims by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which suggested that supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were shifting allegiance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Reacting sharply, Wike dismissed the assertions, pointing out Atiku’s poor performance in Rivers State during the 2023 election, where he secured less than 10 percent of the votes. “I heard someone say, ‘Those who want Atiku have returned,’” Wike remarked. “They couldn’t even deliver 10 percent for him in 2023, so what political value are we talking about?”

He concluded by reaffirming his group’s unwavering support for President Tinubu, pledging to mobilise fully for his re-election campaign. “I won’t mention names — you already know them. We will do everything necessary to give President Tinubu the total support he deserves,” Wike declared.
