Rift Between Atiku and Obi Could Hand Tinubu Upper Hand in 2027 — Dele Momodu

Dele Momodu, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has highlighted the risks of a split between former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, cautioning that such disunity could favor President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election.

In a post on 𝕏, Momodu stressed that divisions within opposition parties have historically undermined their ability to convert widespread voter enthusiasm into actual electoral victories.

Recalling the 2023 presidential contest, where Atiku and Obi finished second and third respectively, he warned that a repeat of such fragmentation could produce similar outcomes, effectively benefiting the ruling APC.

Momodu also praised Atiku for his enduring resilience in Nigerian politics, noting that despite multiple setbacks, the former vice president has remained persistent. “Buhari lost several times and even withdrew at a point, but Atiku has always been closer to the destination and never gave up,” he wrote. “That level of persistence deserves recognition.”

Highlighting the unique strengths both opposition figures bring, Momodu argued that separating their political bases would weaken the collective opposition and hand Tinubu an electoral advantage. “They came second and third in 2023,” he said. “Dividing them again will automatically give Tinubu an advantage. Look at the fresh energy Obi has generated within his base following his move to the ADC.”

He added that Atiku is poised to mobilize and energize his supporters through the extensive political networks he has meticulously developed over decades. “Atiku will re-energise his supporters and deploy the formidable political machinery he has been assembling deliberately since 1993, when he stepped aside for Chief Moshood Abiola during the SDP presidential primaries in Jos,” Momodu explained.
