Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging firm support for President Bola Tinubu and promising to mobilize one million votes for him in the 2027 elections.
The governor made his declaration in Jos on Friday while receiving his APC membership card. He described the move as a decisive step toward fostering unity and accelerating development in Plateau State.
Reflecting on his decision, Mutfwang said his long-standing vision has always centered on bringing the state together. He expressed optimism that Plateau is entering a new phase of cooperation and reconciliation, stressing that collective progress must take precedence over individual interests. According to him, the APC platform provides the vehicle through which the state can advance its broader goals.
He also reassured critics and supporters who may feel uncertain about the transition. Calling for calm and faith in the process, Mutfwang said the political shift represents a journey grounded in conviction and hope. He emphasized his desire to reduce political bitterness in the state and promote a leadership culture guided by unity and shared purpose.
Addressing concerns about his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the governor maintained that there is no animosity between him and his former associates. He described them as friends and allies, expressing confidence that they remain committed to the developmental initiatives previously launched together, even as political alignments change.
On his relationship with President Tinubu, Mutfwang revealed that he had pledged his support to the president during their first meeting in June 2023. He noted that joining the APC now positions him to contribute more directly to national discussions and decision-making, giving Plateau a stronger voice at the federal level.
Looking ahead, the governor projected confidence in a peaceful political climate as the next election cycle approaches. He stated that Plateau is capable of conducting one of its most orderly elections yet and reaffirmed his commitment to delivering one million votes in support of President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
