Venus Williams will make history at this year’s Australian Open after receiving a wildcard entry, becoming the oldest woman ever to compete in the tournament’s main draw.

The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, now 45, is preparing for her first appearance at Melbourne Park since 2021. Her return adds yet another remarkable chapter to a career that has significantly shaped modern women’s tennis.

Williams expressed her excitement about heading back to Australia. “I’m thrilled to be back in Australia and can’t wait to compete during the Australian summer,” she said. “I’ve created so many special memories there, and I truly appreciate the opportunity to return to a place that has played such an important role in my career.”

Her participation will see her surpass the previous age benchmark set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she last competed in Melbourne in 2015.

Throughout her distinguished career, Williams has claimed five Wimbledon singles titles and two US Open crowns. At the Australian Open, she reached the singles finals in 2003 and 2017, in addition to lifting the doubles trophy four times.

Although her singles appearances have been limited in recent seasons, Williams has carefully mapped out her return to competitive action. She is set to begin her Australian swing at the Auckland Classic next week, followed by the Hobart International, which will serve as her final preparation before the Grand Slam begins.

Momentum for her comeback began building after she competed at last year’s US Open, marking her return to the tour following a 16-month absence.

Her decision to compete in Melbourne has been warmly received across the tennis world. Fellow American and two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff described Williams’ return as a truly special moment for the sport.

The 2026 Australian Open is scheduled to run from January 18 through February 1, where Williams will once again step onto one of tennis’ biggest stages.
