AFCON 2025: Fisayo Dele-Bashiru Speaks on Emotional Missed Opportunity With Brother Tom

Spread the love

Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has shared his emotional reaction after missing the chance to feature alongside his younger brother, Tom Dele-Bashiru, at the ongoing AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco.

Although both players were initially named in Nigeria’s provisional squad ahead of the competition, only Fisayo eventually secured a place in the final team list submitted for the tournament.

Family Dream Put on Hold

For the Dele-Bashiru family, the possibility of seeing two brothers represent Nigeria together on Africa’s biggest football stage was a special dream.

However, that excitement was cut short when the final squad announcement excluded Tom from the travelling team.

Speaking about the situation, Fisayo admitted the moment carried mixed emotions despite Nigeria’s strong start to the tournament.

The Nigeria national football team midfielder explained that his family had eagerly anticipated the historic possibility of both siblings wearing the national colours side by side.

Fisayo Focused on AFCON Mission

Currently playing for S.S. Lazio, Fisayo has remained an important figure for Nigeria during the group phase of the tournament.

The midfielder delivered impressive performances as the Super Eagles recorded victories against Tanzania and Uganda to finish top of Group C.

According to Gossip News Now, the 24-year-old admitted that while he remains proud of the team’s achievements, the absence of his younger brother slightly reduced the emotional satisfaction of the moment.

Rather than dwelling on disappointment, however, Fisayo said the experience has motivated both of them to continue pushing harder in their careers.

Hope Still Alive for Future Partnership

The midfielder remains optimistic that the opportunity to play together for Nigeria will eventually arrive.

He reportedly stated that representing the Super Eagles together would mean far more than just football success, especially considering the sacrifices and support their family invested throughout their journey.

Fisayo also hinted that the setback has strengthened their determination to earn future invitations to the national team.

Super Eagles Shift Attention to Knockout Stage

With the group stage now concluded, Nigeria’s attention has shifted toward the knockout rounds of AFCON 2025.

The Super Eagles are preparing for a crucial Round of 16 encounter against Mozambique national football team, as the team continues its pursuit of a fourth continental title.

Coach Eric Chelle will be hoping key players like Fisayo maintain their form as the competition becomes more intense.

Commentary and Analysis

Stories involving siblings in international football often create emotional connections with fans, and the Dele-Bashiru situation is no different.

While missing out on sharing the AFCON stage together was clearly disappointing, Fisayo’s comments also reflect the competitive reality of elite football, where final squad decisions can be extremely difficult.

Nigeria’s midfield depth continues to improve, and the possibility of both brothers eventually featuring together for the Super Eagles remains realistic if their club performances continue progressing.

For now, Fisayo’s immediate priority will be helping Nigeria navigate the pressure-filled knockout rounds and potentially lift the AFCON trophy in Morocco.
