EPL: Watkins Leads Aston Villa Charge as Forest Mistakes Prove Punishing

Ollie Watkins has once again proven his quality, leading Aston Villa to a commanding home victory over Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, with the visitors’ mistakes proving costly. Watkins scored for the fourth time in his last three appearances, helping Villa recover after a recent defeat at Arsenal and marking their 11th straight league win at Villa Park, the club’s longest home streak in 36 years.

Midfielder John McGinn played a pivotal role, netting twice as Unai Emery’s side surged to second place in the table, creating a 12-point cushion over fifth-placed Chelsea. Nottingham Forest briefly threatened when Morgan Gibbs-White scored, but repeated errors ultimately sealed their fate.

Forest’s difficulties deepen as they recorded their fourth consecutive league defeat, a first in over two years. The poor run had earlier led to the departure of Steve Cooper, and under current manager Sean Dyche, they sit just four points above the relegation zone. Their next challenge is a key trip to West Ham, facing former boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Villa dominated early, nearly taking the lead through Watkins before a fine save from Forest goalkeeper John Victor denied him. The breakthrough came just before halftime when Watkins finished a pass from Morgan Rogers with a precise strike from outside the box.

Shortly after the restart, McGinn doubled the lead, and although Gibbs-White pulled one back for Forest, the visitors’ hopes quickly faded. A goalkeeper error left the goal open, allowing McGinn to score from 35 yards into an empty net, cementing Villa’s advantage.

Watkins’ resurgence has transformed a season that initially seemed uncertain. He had scored only once in his first 19 matches and was omitted from England’s squad in November after withdrawing from October duty due to injury. Doubts about his ability to make the World Cup squad had arisen, but those concerns are fading rapidly.

Now, the 30-year-old has six goals in his last eight games and marked his 250th appearance for Aston Villa with another influential display. Since joining from Brentford in 2020, Watkins has consistently contributed goals and remains a key figure for the team.

His partnership with Morgan Rogers continues to flourish. The duo combined for Villa’s opener against Forest and have been directly involved in 10 Premier League goals together since last season, the highest tally for any pairing in the division.
