Tension reportedly broke out in Rivers State after suspected political thugs allegedly invaded a hotel in the Orazi axis of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area during a live television interview being conducted by Arise TV.

The incident occurred while former Rivers commissioner Leloonu Nwibubasa was discussing political developments in the state during a live broadcast segment.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the attackers stormed the venue unexpectedly, forcing the programme to stop abruptly as panic spread across the hotel premises.

Broadcast Equipment Allegedly Carted Away

Sources familiar with the incident claimed the intruders allegedly seized several broadcasting tools belonging to the media crew, including cameras and technical accessories used for the live production.

The disruption reportedly happened late Tuesday night during a political discussion focused on Rivers State affairs and the growing political tension within the region.

According to Gossip News Now, the situation escalated after comments made during the interview were allegedly interpreted by some individuals as critical of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

Witnesses alleged that some of the invading youths openly declared that such discussions would not be tolerated in the area.

Guests and Staff Flee Amid Panic

The invasion reportedly caused fear among hotel guests and workers, many of whom fled for safety as the attackers moved through different sections of the building.

Sources claimed the armed youths searched several rooms while attempting to locate both Nwibubasa and members of the Arise TV crew.

The former commissioner and journalists reportedly managed to avoid physical harm during the confusion.

Some witnesses alleged that the attackers forcefully moved around the hotel while chanting political slogans connected to Rivers State politics.

Police Intervention Prevents Further Escalation

An Arise TV reporter identified as Andy Omano reportedly contacted security authorities shortly after escaping the scene.

Police officers later arrived at the hotel alongside divisional authorities and reportedly assisted in evacuating the media crew and Nwibubasa safely from the location.

Statements were subsequently said to have been taken at a nearby police station as investigations into the incident commenced.

Additional reports indicated that some of the attackers fled immediately after security operatives appeared at the scene.

Nwibubasa Reacts to Incident

Reacting afterward, Nwibubasa reportedly condemned the attack and described the development as dangerous for democratic engagement and free political discussion.

He maintained that political conversations and opposing opinions should not result in violence or intimidation.

The former commissioner also expressed concern over what he described as increasing hostility surrounding political debates in Rivers State.

Analysis: Growing Political Tension Raises Concerns in Rivers

Political observers say the disruption highlights the rising tension surrounding Rivers politics ahead of future political contests in the state.

Analysts believe attacks targeting political discussions or media activities could deepen concerns about freedom of expression and political tolerance within the region.

The incident is also expected to intensify conversations around political violence, media safety, and the broader struggle for influence between rival political camps in Rivers State.

Many observers are now calling for a thorough investigation and stronger protection for journalists covering sensitive political issues.
