U.S. Senator Says Venezuelan President Maduro Arrested, To Face Trial in U.S.

United States Senator Mike Lee has publicly stated that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is now in the custody of U.S. forces and is expected to face criminal prosecution in the United States. The comments came after Lee said he spoke directly with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio following what was described as a military “kinetic action” carried out earlier that evening.

According to Lee’s post on X, Rubio informed him that the mission was launched to enforce an arrest warrant against Maduro. Lee quoted Rubio as saying that Maduro has been arrested to stand trial on criminal charges in the United States and that the military action was intended to protect the personnel executing the warrant.

The senator suggested that the operation likely falls under the president’s constitutional powers — specifically Article II, which allows for the protection of U.S. personnel in the face of imminent threats — though the legality of the action without congressional approval has been questioned by some lawmakers.

Lee also noted that, according to Rubio, no additional military operations in Venezuela are expected now that Maduro is in U.S. custody. This assertion came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a “large‑scale strike” on Venezuela and said that Maduro and his wife had been captured and moved out of the country.

So far, no official statement from the U.S. government confirming the arrest has been released, although other officials have indicated that Maduro will be transported to the United States to face charges previously filed there.
