United States President Donald Trump has declared that the U.S. will oversee Venezuela temporarily as the country transitions to new leadership.
Trump made the statement on Saturday during a press briefing following the U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
“We cannot risk someone taking control of Venezuela who does not have the best interests of the Venezuelan people in mind,” Trump said.
The former president also described Venezuela’s oil sector as “a bust,” promising that American oil companies would invest billions of dollars to repair the nation’s dilapidated oil infrastructure and restore revenue generation.
He warned that all political and military figures in Venezuela should recognize that what happened to Maduro could happen to them.
“Venezuelan people are free again,” Trump stated, adding that the United States is now a “safer” and “prouder” nation.
Speaking alongside Trump, U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth described the operation as “a massive joint military and law enforcement raid, flawlessly executed.”
Hegseth remarked that Maduro “had his chance, just like Iran had their chance,” but “he effed around,” leading to the current outcome.
