Wike Warns of Political Ruin if Fubara Wins Second Term

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned that allowing Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to secure another term in office would pose a serious threat to his own political future.

Speaking on Saturday at a stakeholders’ meeting in Okrika Local Government Area, Wike made it clear that he and his allies have already taken a firm position regarding the state’s political direction. He disclosed that conversations have been held with President Bola Tinubu concerning the issue of Fubara’s potential re-election.

Wike explained that backing Fubara again would amount to repeating what he described as a costly political error. According to him, he is unwilling to risk what he termed political “burial” by supporting a move he believes could damage his standing. He stressed that a final decision has been reached and urged party members and supporters to take note.

The minister also renewed his criticism of the Rivers governor, particularly following Fubara’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Wike alleged that the governor breached an earlier peace accord, which he said played a key role in ending the state’s emergency rule and facilitating his return to political office.

Meanwhile, the Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress has publicly withdrawn its support for Fubara and declared allegiance to Wike. The announcement was made by the group’s chairman, Senator George Sekibo, during Wike’s “Thank You” visit to Okrika.

Sekibo described the rift between the two political figures as unfortunate but maintained that the Ijaw community remains grateful for Wike’s past contributions. He recalled the minister’s significant role in backing Fubara’s emergence as governor, noting that the development once demonstrated the political strength of the Ijaw people.
