The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reiterated that it will not support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election ambition in 2027, stressing that the party remains firmly committed to its role as a credible opposition force in Nigeria’s political landscape.

At an inauguration ceremony held in Abuja on Sunday, ADC National Chairman, Nafiu Bala Gombe, publicly distanced the party from a statement credited to Hon. Leke Joseph Abijide, which allegedly endorsed Tinubu’s second-term bid.

“I want to clearly state that the leadership of the African Democratic Congress does not associate itself with the statement credited to Hon. Leke Joseph Abijide endorsing President Bola Tinubu for 2027,” Bala declared.

He emphasized that the remark does not reflect the party’s official position, firmly rejecting any suggestion of alignment with the ruling party and reaffirming the ADC’s identity as a determined opposition platform.

The event also marked the formal inauguration of the party’s zonal and state congress as well as appeal committees nationwide — a move described by Bala as a significant milestone in strengthening internal democracy and preparing the party for upcoming electoral contests.

Addressing attendees, Bala described the inauguration as an important phase in the ADC’s growth and institutional development. He explained that the committees were established to ensure broader participation and reinforce internal structures at every level of the party.

According to him, the committees are mandated to supervise congresses at the ward, local government, state, and zonal levels, in strict compliance with the ADC constitution and Nigeria’s Electoral Act.

Their responsibilities include upholding constitutional standards, implementing approved congress guidelines, overseeing voting processes, managing ballots, and ensuring transparent declaration of results.

Bala called on members across the country to remain united and focused on building a political platform rooted in fairness, equity, and justice.

In his acceptance speech, Abimikun Monday, Chairman of the North-West Zonal Congress Committee, described the inauguration as a turning point in efforts to reposition the party for greater national relevance.

“This inauguration represents a major milestone in our collective effort to strengthen and reposition the leadership of the ADC at all levels,” Monday said.

He noted that the task entrusted to the committee reflects the confidence placed in them by the party’s national leadership and commended Bala’s persistence in steering the party through internal challenges.

“Our mandate is to ensure the proper planning and conduct of zonal, state, and local government congresses in strict accordance with the ADC constitution, approved guidelines, and Nigeria’s Electoral Act,” he added.

Also speaking, Kaduna State ADC Chairman Sani Aliyu Mohammed reaffirmed the party’s resolve to pursue political power through democratic and lawful means. He pledged intensified grassroots mobilization and effective organization across states and local governments.

“We are committed to making the ADC the new political name and the new anthem on the lips of Nigerians come 2027. This is a pledge, and we will pursue it using every legitimate and legal avenue available,” Mohammed stated.

He concluded by appreciating party members for their continued support and assuring them that the newly inaugurated committees would carry out their duties diligently as the ADC prepares to shape the national political conversation ahead of the 2027 elections.
