2027: Obasanjo Works to Forge Obi-Kwankwaso Alliance

Fresh political maneuvering is underway as former President Olusegun Obasanjo is reportedly spearheading efforts to bring Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso together on a joint presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections.

Sources cited by Daily Trust indicate that Obasanjo is convinced that a combined Obi–Kwankwaso candidacy would stand a stronger chance of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the polls.

The emerging plan suggests that both Obi and Kwankwaso may seek the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), positioning themselves against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar during the party’s primaries. The broader objective, insiders say, is to consolidate opposition forces under a more formidable alliance.

According to multiple sources, Obasanjo has made progress in persuading Kwankwaso to consider accepting the vice-presidential slot on a ticket led by Obi. One insider revealed that a key step in the strategy involves securing the ADC ticket by directly challenging Atiku during the primary contest.

It was further disclosed that Kwankwaso recently visited Obasanjo in Abeokuta, where the former president reportedly advised him to formally join the ADC and align with Obi as running mate. The visit reportedly followed earlier counsel from former military president General Ibrahim Babangida, who had also encouraged Kwankwaso to consider the ADC platform, though without specifically mentioning a vice-presidential role.

Sources close to the discussions claim that the political climate — both within Nigeria and internationally — is currently seen as favorable to Obi’s presidential ambition. Obasanjo is described as a longstanding advocate of Obi’s leadership potential. In fact, it was recalled that Atiku Abubakar once acknowledged in 2019 that Obasanjo recommended Obi as his running mate during that election cycle.

Political insiders also suggest that both Obi and Kwankwaso understand the uphill task of confronting Atiku individually, given his established base within the party. However, a united front, they believe, would significantly boost their chances of clinching the ADC ticket.

Meanwhile, Kwankwaso’s camp has confirmed that consultations are ongoing. A close aide to the former Kano State governor disclosed that high-level engagements with major political stakeholders and organizations are in progress.

While the NNPP has yet to officially outline its strategy or reach a final decision, the aide assured that a clear position would soon be communicated. He stressed that Nigeria urgently requires new direction amid rising insecurity and institutional challenges.

Responding to reports about a possible meeting involving Kwankwaso, Obasanjo, and Obi, the aide neither confirmed nor denied the discussions. However, insiders maintain that at least two strategic pathways are currently being explored to ensure that an Obi–Kwankwaso alliance remains a key factor in the 2027 electoral contest.
