A significant political shift is unfolding in Rivers State as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Benibo Anabraba, has formally withdrawn his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
His resignation was conveyed through a letter dated January 5, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 1 in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area. In the correspondence, Anabraba described his decision as a personal one, while acknowledging the role the party played in his political journey.
He expressed appreciation for the platform and influence he enjoyed during his time in the PDP, noting that the support he received contributed meaningfully to his career.
Although Anabraba did not clearly state his future political direction in the letter, insiders suggest that he has aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party at the federal level.
His exit comes amid a growing list of defections from the PDP to the APC within Rivers State. This wave of political migration gained momentum after Governor Siminalayi Fubara made a similar move.
Adding to the shift, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu has also reportedly left the PDP to pitch her tent with the APC, reinforcing signs of a sweeping political restructuring in the state.
The developments are taking place against the backdrop of renewed tension between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Governor Fubara, once considered close political allies.
Political observers believe Governor Fubara’s defection may be part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening his chances of reclaiming Government House in 2027. However, Wike has publicly signaled his determination to resist such ambitions, setting the stage for an intensified political contest in Rivers State.
