The Ambassador of Israel to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, has announced plans for enhanced collaboration between Israel and Nigeria to address escalating security challenges, particularly attacks targeting Christian communities.
Speaking on Arise Television’s current affairs programme, Prime Time, Freeman outlined that Israel’s assistance will focus on intelligence sharing and other cooperative security measures, emphasizing that all operations will proceed under the guidance of Nigerian authorities. “We will be guided by the Nigerian government on where and how we can work together to tackle insecurity across the country,” the ambassador said, highlighting the importance of sovereignty and local oversight.
Freeman further underscored the need for confidentiality in intelligence matters, noting that sensitive communications must remain private to ensure the effectiveness of the cooperation. “Any communication behind the scenes will, of course, remain behind the scenes. When dealing with intelligence and sensitive information, public discussion could compromise the entire purpose of these exchanges,” he explained.
Addressing broader concerns, Freeman clarified that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements were not solely about Nigeria, but reflected a global interest in the protection of Christian communities. He also highlighted Israel’s unique religious landscape in the Middle East, noting that it is the only country in the region with a growing Christian population, a point emphasized in the Prime Minister’s message.
The ambassador’s remarks signal a strengthened commitment from Israel to support Nigeria in ensuring national stability and safeguarding vulnerable populations, blending strategic security assistance with respect for Nigerian direction and local priorities.
