Former President Goodluck Jonathan convened a confidential meeting with the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday as the party navigates ongoing internal disputes.
The NWC delegation, led by National Chairman Tanimu Turaki, arrived at Jonathan’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, in a convoy of six SUVs, underlining the meeting’s significance. Selected state chairpersons also participated in the closed-door discussion.
According to insiders, the primary focus was to review strategies aimed at resolving internal tensions and to explore approaches for strengthening the PDP’s structure ahead of future elections. Party sources noted that Jonathan’s involvement extends beyond internal mediation, given his status as a former president and influential figure within the party.
One official familiar with the meeting explained, “The leadership considered it necessary to consult with the former president, update him on recent developments, and seek his advice.” Jonathan has a history of discreetly mediating disputes and facilitating reconciliation among party members.
While the discussions were ongoing at the time of reporting, neither the PDP nor Jonathan’s office had issued a public statement, reflecting the private and strategic nature of the engagement.
