Reports have emerged suggesting that influential members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be planning to leave the party and join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling possible shifts in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Sources close to the matter told The Whistler that discussions between these PDP leaders and the ADC’s national leadership are progressing quietly, with formal announcements potentially forthcoming. Many of the leaders reportedly feel disillusioned with the current PDP hierarchy, viewing the ADC as offering “a more stable and ideologically consistent platform” to pursue their political ambitions.
A senior PDP insider explained, “There is mounting frustration. A lot of leaders feel the PDP has failed to address its internal conflicts, so they are now exploring other political options.”
This speculation follows a private meeting on Tuesday at former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Maitama residence. The gathering involved a faction of the PDP led by ex-minister Kabiru Turaki. While the details of the discussions remain confidential, observers note that Turaki’s group is aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, whereas the opposing faction under Abdulrahman Mohammed reportedly aligns with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Meanwhile, the ADC has been quietly engaging in consultations with prominent politicians and dissatisfied members of other parties. An ADC national executive confirmed that talks with PDP figures and others are ongoing but stressed that only those who adhere to the party’s values and internal discipline will be welcomed. “We welcome collaboration, but we remain committed to discipline and internal democracy,” the official stated.
Despite these developments, PDP leaders have sought to reassure members, downplaying rumours of mass defections. One party official emphasized that the PDP remains strong, noting ongoing efforts to resolve internal grievances and urging members to maintain loyalty.
