Former APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Timi Frank, has publicly questioned the independence of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission under its Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, calling for his resignation. Frank contends that the agency has deviated from its statutory mandate and appears to operate in alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress.
In a statement on Wednesday, he argued that EFCC leadership has increasingly engaged in selective enforcement, favoring political allies and undermining the commission’s credibility. According to Frank, the line between a neutral anti-graft agency and the ruling party’s political interests has blurred, resulting in a loss of public trust.
He highlighted specific instances to support his claims, including the case of former Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, noting that scrutiny of the governor waned after reported meetings with EFCC officials and his subsequent defection to the APC. Frank asserted that Okowa was later rewarded with a government role as a “Renewed Hope Ambassador,” signaling favoritism.
Additionally, Frank alleged that confiscated assets had been quietly returned to certain individuals aligned with the ruling party. He claimed that under the current administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, persons facing serious corruption allegations are being compensated with government appointments.
Expressing alarm at this trend, Frank stated:
“We have sadly reached a point where one can hardly distinguish a statutory anti-graft institution from one operating in the service of the ruling party. People accused of plundering public funds are now being rewarded with prominent appointments, in clear collaboration with a commission that behaves more like a mediator than a prosecutor.”
His comments raise concerns about perceived political influence over Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption body and call into question the EFCC’s role in upholding accountability without partisan bias.
