Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has raised alarm over what it described as a coordinated attempt by certain political actors to damage its credibility and weaken its ongoing investigations. The Commission warned that these efforts appear aimed at obstructing sensitive corruption cases.
In a statement issued on January 7, the EFCC alleged that individuals linked to suspects currently facing investigation or prosecution were financing media narratives designed to tarnish both the institution and its chairman, Ola Olukoyede. According to the agency, these attacks are part of a broader plan to cast doubt on its integrity and suggest bias where none exists.
The Commission claimed that the campaign involves a network of politically connected individuals, including activists, academics, and even fugitives living abroad. It accused them of working together to promote misleading claims and negative publicity in order to erode public confidence in the EFCC’s work.
EFCC officials believe the ultimate intention behind the allegations is to pressure the agency into halting certain high-profile investigations. They explained that spreading accusations of partisanship is meant to intimidate the Commission and discourage it from pursuing politically exposed persons, especially as Nigeria approaches the 2027 election cycle.
Reaffirming its independence, the EFCC insisted that it remains guided strictly by its legal mandate and constitutional responsibilities. The agency emphasised that its operations are not influenced by political affiliation, stressing that individuals from both ruling and opposition parties have faced investigation and prosecution where evidence exists.
The Commission also addressed calls for transparency regarding ongoing cases, explaining that it cannot disclose details prematurely. It noted that respecting the legal principle of presumption of innocence and maintaining investigative confidentiality should not be interpreted as shielding any suspect or favouring any political group.
Despite the alleged smear campaign, the EFCC made it clear that it remains committed to enforcing accountability and tackling corruption without fear or favour. The agency stated that no form of intimidation or media pressure would deter it from carrying out its duties and upholding justice in Nigeria.
