Arne Slot Hails Arsenal as Complete Side Defends Liverpool’s Playing Style Ahead of Emirates Clash

As Liverpool prepare to visit the Emirates Stadium for their Round 21 Premier League clash on Thursday, head coach Arne Slot offered high praise for Arsenal, describing them as a team with very few weaknesses and multiple strengths.

“They have almost no obvious weaknesses,” Slot noted in a pre-match press conference. “They rarely concede, can score from open play or set pieces, build attacks effectively from the back, and can execute long balls when needed. They are a very complete team with quality players across the pitch, which explains why they are top of the table.”

Liverpool head to the match unbeaten in their last nine league games, but recent results—including draws against Leeds and Fulham, and a narrow 2-1 win over Wolves—have drawn criticism for a perceived lack of attacking flair. Slot acknowledged the critique but defended his squad’s style.

“I find it hard to hear those words, but I don’t completely disagree,” he said. “I would phrase it differently and consider other factors. My aim is to win trophies while promoting attacking football. That remains our focus.”

Statistics back up Slot’s perspective. Opta data shows Liverpool have created 53 big chances in the Premier League this season, converting 32 into goals. While this ranks them seventh—on par with Newcastle—it is below Arsenal and Manchester City, who lead with 62 and 65 big chances, respectively.

Slot also addressed squad concerns, noting that leading scorer Hugo Ekitike is doubtful for the game due to a hamstring issue, with a final decision pending after the team’s last training session.

“One thing I insist on is winning while playing attractive football,” Slot said. “We are constantly working on strategies to break down defensive teams, which is challenging but essential. We don’t have all the answers yet, but improvement is ongoing every day.”

Despite the scrutiny, Slot remains committed to his philosophy, confident that Liverpool can combine results with the attacking style he champions.
