Tensions have emerged within the Nigerian national team ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final against Algeria, as players and staff reportedly consider refusing training due to unpaid bonuses.
Despite an unbeaten run so far—triumphing over Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and most recently a 4-0 demolition of Mozambique—the squad has yet to receive the win bonuses promised for these matches. This has fueled frustration within the team, who are reportedly ready to take a stand unless the matter is swiftly resolved.
Sports journalist Olúwashínà Okeleji confirmed the situation on 𝕏, noting that the Super Eagles may not travel to Marrakech as scheduled:
“Players and coaching staff of #Nigeria are waiting on #AFCON2025 bonus payments. Win bonuses from four matches – vs Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda & Mozambique – have yet to be received. Squad remain focused but will NOT train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday if this isn’t resolved.”
Currently topping Group C and leading the tournament in goals scored, the Nigerian side’s planned quarter-final trip could be delayed if payments are not made. The team has already declined to participate in scheduled training sessions as a show of protest.
This is not an unprecedented situation for the Super Eagles. In November 2025, ahead of World Cup playoff matches against Gabon, the squad staged a strike over unpaid dues, which was resolved within a day. Reports indicate that even head coach Eric Chelle had outstanding fees prior to the tournament, highlighting recurring financial management issues by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
As the Super Eagles prepare for their high-stakes quarter-final on Saturday at 5 p.m., the resolution of this bonus dispute will be critical to maintaining focus and morale for the clash against Algeria.
