Fenerbahce have intensified their pursuit of Nigerian international Ademola Lookman, signaling a possible high-profile acquisition during this January transfer window. The Istanbul-based club is reportedly set to submit a formal proposal aimed at assessing Atalanta’s willingness to negotiate on the forward.
Italian journalist Orazio Accomando, reporting for Sport Mediaset, disclosed that Fenerbahce’s approach would involve a loan fee of €5 million, accompanied by a purchase option or obligation of €37 million. This structure brings the total potential deal value to €42 million.
Although talks are preliminary, Lookman has emerged as a key target for Fenerbahce, who are eager to reinforce their attacking line midway through the season. Atalanta, however, remain cautious, favoring a permanent transfer rather than a temporary loan arrangement.
“Atalanta would prefer a permanent transfer, but developments remain possible,” the report noted, reflecting the Italian club’s careful approach. The Bergamo side values Lookman highly due to his consistent performances in Serie A and continental competitions, making them reluctant to accept any deal that doesn’t meet their valuation.
Currently representing Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Lookman has impressed with three goals and four assists, positioning him as one of the tournament’s standout players. His performances have only increased his market appeal as Nigeria pursues a fourth continental title.
This pursuit follows last summer’s speculation linking Lookman to Inter Milan. At that time, he was reportedly open to leaving Atalanta, but Inter failed to meet the club’s asking price, leaving the forward in Bergamo.
Fenerbahce’s forthcoming offer may hinge on whether they can meet Atalanta’s conditions for a permanent transfer or structure the loan with an obligation to buy acceptable to the Italian side. The next steps in negotiations will be crucial in determining Lookman’s mid-season destination.
