Wike Disregards Rule of Law, My Critique Isn’t Personal — Ireti Kingibe

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has openly raised concerns about Minister Nyesom Wike’s approach to governance, accusing him of bypassing established legal procedures while performing his duties.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday night, Kingibe acknowledged some visible achievements, including infrastructure improvements, but maintained that consistent oversight and adherence to the rule of law remain lacking.

She cited her own experience, explaining that a letter she sent to Wike praising the rehabilitation of Kunene Close was misinterpreted as political endorsement. “That letter was simply to appreciate the repair of a road that had long been abandoned — not because it was my personal street,” she clarified.

Kingibe emphasized that her critiques stem from her legislative responsibilities, not personal animosity. “The minister has made some positive efforts, but many times he does not follow the rule of law. It’s my responsibility to point out where he falls short. None of this is personal,” she stated.

The senator further criticized the absence of regular consultations between the FCT minister and elected officials. She contrasted Wike’s approach with previous ministers, who reportedly held monthly meetings to address community concerns and collaborate on solutions. “It’s almost three years since he assumed office, and I have never sat with him in any formal engagement,” Kingibe lamented, noting ongoing challenges such as security issues and poor waste management.

Despite her frustrations, Kingibe expressed hope that improved cooperation between Wike and lawmakers will emerge in the coming year, emphasizing that coordinated governance is essential for the well-being of FCT residents.
