Former Premier League official David Coote, 43, from Woodhill in Collingham, Nottinghamshire, has been handed a nine-month suspended prison sentence for possessing a video depicting child abuse. The sentence, delivered at Nottingham Crown Court, comes with a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and 150 hours of unpaid community service.
The case involved a Category A video, the most severe classification, showing a 15-year-old boy in a school uniform. The footage, lasting two minutes and 11 seconds, was discovered on Coote’s Dell laptop during a 2020 investigation. Coote admitted to the offence in October 2025, after initially denying involvement.
Judge Nirmal Shant KC addressed Coote directly, stressing the gravity of the crime:
“Anyone who commits this type of offence must understand that real children are harmed in the making of such material.”
The matter first came to light following a Football Association investigation, during which police seized multiple electronic devices from Coote’s residence. Forensic examination confirmed the presence of the illegal video.
Coote’s defence highlighted personal factors, including emotional distress following the breakdown of a relationship, suggesting the incident was not reflective of his general character. His lawyer, Laura Miller, stated that Coote has been working to rebuild his life over the past six years.
The court also examined Coote’s broader history. He had previously received a caution for cocaine possession and faced intense public scrutiny over multiple controversies. Judge Shant described the events as a “spectacular fall from grace,” noting the cumulative effect of career setbacks, personal struggles, and public attention.
Gossip News Now reports that Coote was dismissed by the Premier League in 2024, following earlier controversies including remarks about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. He also endured an eight-week suspension from the FA and remains banned by UEFA until 30 June 2026 after images surfaced of him using a white substance during Euro 2024.
In a separate revelation in January 2025, Coote publicly came out as gay, admitting that years of concealing his sexuality contributed to emotional strain and may have influenced past lapses in judgment.
Judge Shant concluded with a stern warning:
“If you breach this order in any way, or if there are any further offences, particularly of a sexual nature, you will be brought back to court.”
Commentary: This case illustrates how personal struggles and past indiscretions can escalate into serious criminal consequences. While Coote’s suspended sentence acknowledges mitigating factors, the ruling also emphasizes accountability and child protection above all. It serves as a cautionary tale for public figures in high-profile roles whose private actions can have lasting professional and legal repercussions.
