In Abia State, political tensions are rising ahead of the 2027 elections as the camp of Governor Alex Otti signals resistance to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s ambitions. According to Dodoh Okafor, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to Governor Otti, Kalu may face unexpected obstacles in his bid to secure electoral victory.
Okafor’s comments were prompted by Kalu’s recent criticisms of Otti’s administration, which have stirred debate within political circles. He argued that Kalu seems to be relying heavily on external backing rather than grassroots support.
APC Members May Resist Kalu
Highlighting internal party dynamics, Okafor asserted that members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia North, along with other voters, may actively oppose Kalu’s campaign. He suggested that the senator’s traditional influence might not guarantee him the support he expects.
“APC members in Abia will work fervently against Orji Kalu,” Okafor said, emphasizing that opposition within Kalu’s own party could be decisive in shaping the outcome.
Otti’s Performance as a Political Advantage
According to Okafor, Governor Otti’s record in office positions him and his allies strongly for the upcoming elections. He highlighted that ongoing state projects under Otti are of higher quality and broader impact compared to those completed during Kalu’s tenure. This, he argued, enhances Otti’s political capital and indirectly boosts the chances of any candidate he endorses.
“Ultimately, any candidate endorsed by Dr. Otti for any position in 2027, including the Abia North Senatorial seat, already stands a 70% chance of victory,” Okafor added.
The External Influence Factor
Okafor also cautioned that Kalu’s dependence on outside powers could backfire. “Kalu will be disappointed by the external powers he may be counting on because this time, everyone will be fighting for their political survival,” he warned. This reflects a broader trend of intensified competition within Abia politics, where local dynamics increasingly override outside endorsements.
Analysis: What This Signals for 2027
Political analysts suggest that Okafor’s statements serve both as a warning to Kalu and as a strategic message to the electorate. By framing Otti’s administration as highly effective and underscoring the likelihood of success for his endorsed candidates, the governor’s team is consolidating support and sending a clear signal that opposition efforts may face organized resistance.
If the predictions hold, the 2027 elections in Abia could witness not only a contest between parties but also notable intra-party friction, particularly within the APC ranks. Observers will be watching closely to see whether Kalu can overcome these challenges or if Otti’s influence continues to dominate local political calculations.
