Former Enugu Governor Raises Alarm Over Possible Hidden Agenda in New Tax Law

Okwesilieze Nwodo, ex-Governor of Enugu State and veteran political figure, has raised serious concerns regarding the recent tax law passed by the National Assembly. He warned that differences between the version approved by lawmakers and the version eventually gazetted could reflect a hidden agenda, calling for a full investigation by President Bola Tinubu.

In an interview with ThisDay, Nwodo emphasized that public trust is at stake. He highlighted that Nigerians had engaged with the executive throughout the legislative process, and any opaque alterations could undermine democratic accountability.

“Every adult Nigerian who is eligible to pay tax ought to do so for the country to survive. Nobody is against renewing tax laws to make the system more efficient,” Nwodo remarked, while stressing that the law’s integrity is just as crucial as compliance.

Alleged Alterations and Government Responsibility

Nwodo criticized the apparent discrepancies between the National Assembly’s passed bill and the gazetted version, calling the situation “totally embarrassing.” He questioned the source of the printed legislation and demanded clarity on who authorized the final gazetted document.

“A government that is working for the people should be asking critical questions, such as: who sent this piece of legislation to the press for printing? Where did the copy sent to the press come from?” he stated, advocating for transparency and accountability.

He insisted that any individuals responsible for the modifications be identified and held accountable. According to Nwodo, the president should publicly address the issue and ensure a corrected bill is formally submitted and properly gazetted.

“It is unacceptable for parliament to simply say that discrepancies have been noticed and will be corrected. You cannot do this in a country of intelligent people,” he added, underscoring the seriousness of the matter.

Compliance Hinges on Transparency

Beyond legal formalities, Nwodo highlighted the practical implications for Nigerians. He noted that unclear communication and rushed implementation undermine voluntary compliance with tax obligations.

“As a result, we are filled with doubts and confusion. How do you expect compliance?” he asked, challenging the government’s urgency in implementing the law from January 1.

Nwodo argued that careful planning and credibility in legislation encourage adherence, rather than hastily enforcing laws without public clarity.

The People Are Sovereign

In concluding remarks, the elder statesman reminded officials that ultimate authority lies with the citizens, citing the constitution:

“We own this country. Our constitution begins with ‘We the people’. Power resides with the people, not the leader. Leaders are elected every four years, with a maximum of eight years in office, but the people remain.”

The warnings come amid rising public debate on government transparency and confidence in Nigeria’s tax reforms, highlighting the need for clear, accountable legislative processes.

Analysis

Nwodo’s comments underscore a broader issue in governance: legislative transparency is essential for public trust. When laws are altered between approval and gazetting, citizens naturally question the motives and credibility of lawmakers. Ensuring that tax policies are communicated clearly and implemented responsibly can enhance compliance and prevent political disillusionment.
