Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has playfully acknowledged Nigeria’s explosive goal-scoring run at the Africa Cup of Nations, admitting that the Super Eagles’ firepower has not gone unnoticed as both teams prepare for their quarter-final showdown at 5 p.m. today, January 10.

Speaking to journalists in Morocco after Algeria’s last match, Mahrez highlighted Nigeria’s impressive attacking statistics, with the Super Eagles netting 12 goals on their way to the last eight.

“Nigeria have scored 12 goals… I’m afraid,” Mahrez joked with a laugh.

He quickly followed the remark with a more serious assessment.

“They’ve scored a lot of goals in this tournament. Their attack is very strong—no doubt about that. But tomorrow is another day. I’m not scared. It’s football. We have our qualities too, and I think it will be a good match.”

The former Manchester City star anticipates a fierce contest, with Nigeria entering the game as one of the competition’s most entertaining sides. While the Super Eagles have dazzled in attack, Algeria’s progress has been built on defensive solidity, having conceded only once so far. This contrast sets the stage for a high-intensity encounter.

On the Nigerian side, defender Bright Osayi-Samuel remains confident despite Algeria’s reputation for stability at the back. The Birmingham City full-back believes Nigeria’s offensive momentum will be crucial in breaking down the Desert Foxes.

“You’re up against what I think is the best attacking team in Africa,” Osayi-Samuel told reporters in Morocco. “We’ll do everything possible to win.”

He emphasized the team’s focus and the importance of rising to the occasion.

“We take it one game at a time. We know what is at stake. Nigerians are supporting us massively, and we want to deliver for them.”

Nigeria have been known for starting matches aggressively, a pattern Osayi-Samuel believes could unsettle Algeria early.

“The aim is to avoid going all the way to penalties or even extra time,” he said. “We’ve started strong in many games, and that’s what we want to do again.”

Despite his confidence, Osayi-Samuel acknowledged Algeria’s strength and experience.

“They’re a great team with very talented players, and they’ve barely conceded. I watched their last match—they are very well organized. But I still believe we can win.”
