Nigerian families are grappling with fresh economic strain as the prices of staple food items continue to climb in markets nationwide, with a 50kg bag of rice now selling for ₦60,000.
A market survey conducted on Sunday revealed sharp increases across other household essentials:
- Bag of rice: ₦60,000
- Paint bucket of beans: ₦4,500
- Pack of spaghetti: ₦18,700
- One litre of cooking oil: ₦3,500
- Small basket of tomatoes: ₦3,500
- Small basket of pepper: ₦1,200
- Paint bucket of garri: ₦1,200
- Ten dry pieces of ponmo: ₦2,000
Traders attributed the price hikes to rising transportation costs, inflationary pressure, and the high expense of imported goods.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee on food security to accelerate efforts aimed at bringing down the cost of food nationwide.
Speaking at a capacity-building workshop for Senate correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, confirmed the President’s directive. He noted that measures will focus on ensuring safe and efficient transportation of farm produce across the country, a key step to reducing logistics costs that fuel food inflation.
