Thousands of supporters flooded the Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic in Rumuola, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State on Sunday as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, rounded off the final phase of his statewide “Thank You” tour.
The gathering recorded an enormous turnout of political leaders, party members, youth groups, women, and numerous support organizations from across the state, transforming the venue into a sea of cheering supporters singing in honour of the former Rivers State governor.
Addressing the crowd, Wike praised the Obio/Akpor Local Government Chairman, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, and residents of the council area for what he described as an overwhelming display of loyalty, love, and steadfast support.
The FCT Minister, who hails from Obio/Akpor, emphasized the political significance of the area.
“Obio/Akpor people are grateful people. Obio/Akpor alone accounts for nearly 40 percent of the votes in Rivers State, and nobody can afford to toy with this local government,” Wike stated.
He noted that the local government has consistently supported him since 1999, adding that the same loyalty would be demonstrated again during the 2027 general elections.
Wike assured the crowd that Rivers State—particularly Obio/Akpor—would deliver overwhelming votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next election cycle.
“The people of Obio/Akpor and Rivers State will vote massively for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027,” he declared.
Wike also criticized Senator Azuta Mbata, accusing him of allowing family disputes over property to delay the burial of his mother for over three years—an issue he said had tarnished the senator’s public image.
Earlier, in his welcome speech, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu described Wike as “a gift to Obio/Akpor, a gift to leadership, and a gift to Nigeria.”
He added, “This is not your visit; it is our visit. It is not a moment for you to thank us, but a moment for us to thank you.”
Worlu applauded Wike for mentoring leaders and securing numerous appointments for indigenes at both state and federal levels.
He described Wike as the most outstanding council chairman, the most effective Chief of Staff, the most impactful governor in Rivers State’s history, and one of Nigeria’s best-performing ministers.
Reflecting on the 2023 elections, Worlu said Wike’s guidance shaped the community’s decision-making.
“Because we trusted you, we followed your direction. Today, we are reaping the benefits—appointments, projects, and opportunities for our state and local government,” he said.
He added that the people of Obio/Akpor were clear on where they stood concerning the 2027 presidential election and equally clear on where they would not align in the forthcoming governorship race.
“We will not support ingratitude, disrespect, or disloyalty,” he declared.
Assembly Speaker Reaffirms Loyalty to Tinubu
Speaking at the event, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Chike Amaewhule, assured President Tinubu of Obio/Akpor’s unwavering loyalty.
“On behalf of the people of Obio/Akpor, we reaffirm our support and loyalty to Mr. President,” Amaewhule said.
He urged the President to ignore critics, insisting that Nigerians who understand governance appreciate the administration’s efforts and the Renewed Hope Agenda.
‘We Will Deliver Even More in 2027’
Recalling the 2023 presidential election, Amaewhule highlighted that Obio/Akpor delivered one of the highest vote counts for Tinubu and promised an even stronger showing in 2027.
“Tell Mr. President that what we achieved in 2023, we will surpass in 2027,” he assured, offering prayers for the President’s strength, good health, and success.
In his remarks, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Barr. O.C.J. Okocha, SAN, described Wike as an exemplary ambassador of Rivers State and Obio/Akpor.
He commended Wike’s achievements as governor and his ongoing transformation efforts in the Federal Capital Territory.
“We are proud of you. Only God can reward you and the most preferred President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Okocha said.
He described Wike as “the winning man” in Rivers politics and national political affairs.
