EFCC Clarifies Delay in Prosecuting High-Profile Corruption Cases

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained that delays in prosecuting certain high-profile corruption cases are primarily due to the extensive time needed to gather credible and admissible evidence.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede noted that arraigning politically exposed persons or suspects involved in significant public corruption requires thorough investigations, particularly when assets and funds are traced across international borders.

He made the remarks during an interview on Sunday Politics aired on Channels Television.

Addressing public concerns about perceived delays, Olukoyede highlighted that the timeline for prosecuting cybercrime cases is much shorter compared to complex, high-profile corruption matters.

“In 48 hours, I can investigate and arraign a cybercriminal. It is mostly about securing the devices, and the process is complete,” he said.
“But with politically-exposed persons or major corruption cases, it takes time. I cannot take a case to court unless I am fully prepared.”

He emphasized that the duration of investigations does not indicate inactivity or attempts to shield suspects from prosecution.

Olukoyede also dismissed claims that the EFCC selectively targets opposition members while protecting powerful figures, describing such allegations as unfounded and contrary to the commission’s mandate.

Citing the case of former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, who alleged political persecution, the EFCC chairman said, “Let me be clear, there is nothing personal in this matter regarding the former attorney-general.”

He stressed that combating corruption must remain free from political bias for Nigeria to achieve progress.

“If Nigeria is to move forward, everyone must agree that this fight must be conducted without partisanship. That is what I want Nigerians to understand and support,” Olukoyede added.
