Police Checkpoints Major Cause of Traffic Gridlock on Nigerian Roads – Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has highlighted that poorly positioned security checkpoints are the leading cause of traffic congestion across Nigeria.

Posting on his 𝕏 account on Sunday, Obi recounted his experiences on major roads during the festive season, describing the traffic as “appalling” and noting that in some cases, travellers were forced to abandon their journeys in an attempt to escape the chaos.

“This festive season, I traversed several major roads across the country and encountered severe traffic congestion. At times, the gridlock was so extreme that travellers bound for distant destinations had to abandon their journeys, wasting hours trying to navigate through the chaos,” he wrote.

Obi pointed out that a closer assessment revealed ill-placed security checkpoints as the primary source of the congestion.

“Analysis shows that the main contributor to these traffic jams is the positioning of security checkpoints. Placing them at narrow points or near construction areas is irresponsible, bringing traffic to a complete standstill,” he said.

He added that similar experiences were reported across multiple roads nationwide, indicating a systemic problem.

“Some may view these observations as minor, but every detail has real consequences for Nigerians’ daily lives,” Obi stressed.

While acknowledging the dedication and sacrifices of Nigeria’s security personnel, he called for improved judgment and adaptability, especially during peak travel periods.

“Security agencies must exercise greater discretion during busy periods. People are returning from holidays, travelling long distances, and dealing with poor road conditions,” he noted.

Obi warned that prolonged delays caused by traffic bottlenecks not only exhaust drivers but also increase the likelihood of road accidents.

“These avoidable delays leave drivers fatigued, heightening the risk of accidents as they struggle to remain alert. There is no justification for exposing travellers to such setbacks,” he added.

He further argued that the current situation undermines the very purpose of highway security operations.

“Security is meant to protect lives, not endanger them. Long delays push travellers into dangerous conditions, often after dark, at a time when insecurity is rising,” Obi said.

Calling for urgent reforms, the former Anambra State governor urged security agencies to adopt a more strategic and coordinated approach.

“Strategic placement of checkpoints away from narrow roads and construction zones, expedited inspections during heavy traffic, and proper coordination among agencies are essential to eliminate unnecessary bottlenecks,” he advised.

Obi concluded that such measures would improve traffic flow while maintaining security, making Nigerian roads safer and more humane.
