Former Special Adviser to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, has said Nigerians should pity Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, given his current political challenges.

Speaking on his YouTube channel during a discussion titled “Why Wike is Troubled”, Akande described the Minister as being entangled in multiple political battles and enemies, noting that Wike is fighting to maintain control over Rivers State.

Akande highlighted that Wike’s political relevance at this stage is largely sustained by President Bola Tinubu’s support, warning that his influence would diminish if he were removed from his ministerial position.

He said, “When you hear Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers State, declare during his political tours that he no longer wants to hear about PDP or APC in the state but only the Renewed Hope Family, it shows he is beginning to acknowledge his own limitations.

“Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, has hinted at the ongoing friction between them with his remark, ‘If you follow Tinubu don’t do corner corner. Fubara dey tell you something.’

“So, we must pity Wike. His preferred choice of successor is presenting him with a political struggle that challenges his influence in Rivers State. This should serve as a lesson for Nigerian political actors: democracy is not dictatorship. Failure to carry the people along will eventually expose the folly of such actions.

“Although the day of reckoning has not yet arrived for Mr. Wike, he still has resources and political strategies to deploy in maintaining his hold over his structures in Rivers State. He possesses significant funds to sustain this fight.

“Wike is set to continue his efforts to dominate Rivers politics, but one hopes he is not taking on more than he can handle. Not every politician can match the influence of a Jagaban.

“He faces complex political puzzles involving figures who once elevated him but whom he has not been able to fully retire or diminish their influence. These include Peter Odili, former President Goodluck Jonathan, especially his wife Dr. Patience Jonathan, and Chibuike Amaechi.

“At present, Wike’s political survival relies heavily on Tinubu. Should Tinubu remove him as Minister, his position would weaken considerably. Most other political relationships have either been discarded or have run their course.

“It is a challenging period for the FCT Minister. Even the strongest political actors would struggle to manage so many battles and opponents simultaneously. This is why Nigerians should pity Wike,” Akande concluded.
