NNPP Warns Members Against Linking Kwankwaso to Any Defection

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has moved swiftly to counter reports suggesting that its national leader and 2023 presidential flag bearer, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, approved or encouraged any member to defect from the party.

During a televised appearance on Prime Time aired by Arise Television, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, addressed what he described as widespread misinterpretations of Kwankwaso’s recent remarks. According to him, certain narratives were deliberately twisted to imply endorsement of a planned shift to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Specifically, rumors had circulated that Kwankwaso supported Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other NNPP figures in a potential political crossover. Johnson dismissed the claims outright, stating that there was no direct or indirect approval from the former Kano governor.

In clarifying the party’s stance, Johnson stressed that no authorization had been granted for anyone to speak on Kwankwaso’s behalf regarding such political moves. He emphasized that the NNPP leader’s comments were selectively interpreted in a way that created confusion among party supporters.

While acknowledging that individuals have the constitutional right to switch political affiliations, Johnson issued a caution: members choosing to exit must do so independently, without attaching Kwankwaso’s name to their decisions. According to him, personal political ambitions should not be framed as if they carry the blessing of the party’s national figurehead.

He further suggested that those contemplating departure need not dramatize their exit. If they believe alternative platforms offer better prospects, they are free to explore those opportunities — but quietly and without misrepresenting party leadership.

Political Context and Implications

The NNPP’s swift clarification highlights the sensitivity surrounding defections in Nigeria’s political landscape. Public perception can significantly influence grassroots support, especially in states like Kano, where Kwankwaso commands substantial loyalty.

Analysts note that associating a prominent leader’s name with unverified political maneuvers can destabilize party structures and create unnecessary tension. By drawing a clear boundary, the NNPP appears intent on preserving internal cohesion while allowing individual freedom of choice.

Ultimately, the statement signals that, at least for now, Kwankwaso remains firmly aligned with the NNPP, and any claims to the contrary lack official backing.
