Senegal has advanced to the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Egypt in a tense semi-final showdown on Wednesday night.

The game’s decisive moment came in the 78th minute when Sadio Mané struck from the edge of the penalty area, sending the ball into the left corner past the Egyptian goalkeeper. The goal reflected Senegal’s patience and growing control after an evenly contested first hour.

With this win, Senegal will face either Nigeria’s Super Eagles or tournament hosts Morocco in the AFCON 2025 final on Sunday.

Egypt began the match confidently, controlling midfield possession and seeking quick breaks through Mohamed Salah. However, clear scoring opportunities were limited, as Senegal’s defense held firm under repeated pressure.

The first half was marked by frequent fouls and yellow cards, including bookings for Kalidou Koulibaly and Habib Diarra—both of whom will miss the final if Senegal progresses. Despite moments of Egyptian possession, Senegal gradually asserted dominance, pushing their opponents deeper into their own half.

After the interval, Senegal raised the intensity. Nicolas Jackson and Iliman Ndiaye came close to scoring, while successive corners and crosses kept Egypt under constant pressure. The breakthrough arrived when Mané found space outside the box and delivered a precise finish to clinch the lead.

Egypt tried to respond with multiple substitutions in the final minutes but struggled to create meaningful chances, registering just one shot on target throughout the match.

Senegal’s superiority was evident by the final whistle. They held 65 percent possession, registered 12 attempts on goal, and earned six corners, while Egypt spent much of the game defending.

The 1-0 victory ensures that Senegal will meet either Nigeria or Morocco in the AFCON 2025 final this Sunday.
