PDP Maintains Political Relevance Ahead of 2027 Elections — Segun Sowunmi

As Nigeria’s political landscape gradually shifts toward the 2027 general elections, a prominent voice within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) insists the party remains firmly in contention.

Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, Segun Sowunmi dismissed suggestions that internal disagreements have weakened the PDP beyond recovery. According to him, the party’s extensive grassroots structure and nearly three decades of political history still position it as a formidable national platform.

He argued that once ongoing legal and leadership disputes are resolved, Nigerians will again recognize the PDP’s enduring influence. Sowunmi emphasized that the party’s long-standing presence in the country’s democratic journey provides a foundation that cannot be easily erased.

Legacy and Leverage

Rather than projecting premature victory, Sowunmi framed the PDP’s strength as structural rather than momentary. In his view, the party’s slogan and historical footprint reflect an institutional resilience built over 27 years of participation in Nigeria’s political evolution.

He maintained that political relevance is not solely defined by current turbulence but by capacity to reorganize and mobilize. For him, the PDP’s base remains intact, even if internal recalibration is still underway.

A Notable Defection

While Sowunmi projected confidence, developments elsewhere suggest ongoing shifts within opposition ranks. Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has officially moved from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement reportedly took place at the National Assembly, where he was received by Senate Deputy President Barau Jibrin alongside other APC figures. His defection adds another layer to the evolving political chessboard ahead of 2027.

Beyond the symbolic crossover, Abba directed members of the Haske Atiku Organisation — a political network established in 2022 — to align with the APC and support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Political Analysis: Stability Versus Realignment

The contrasting narratives — Sowunmi’s assurance of PDP endurance and Abba’s departure — illustrate the dynamic nature of Nigeria’s party politics. Defections often create short-term perceptions of momentum, but long-term influence typically depends on institutional depth and voter engagement.

For the PDP, the immediate challenge lies in resolving its internal leadership and court-related disputes. For the APC, absorbing high-profile entrants may signal consolidation but also requires managing internal balance.

Ultimately, as 2027 approaches, the contest will hinge less on isolated defections and more on coherent messaging, party unity, and grassroots mobilisation. If Sowunmi’s confidence proves justified, the PDP may yet reassert itself as a key challenger on the national stage.
