The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially appointed Moroccan referee Jalal Jiyed to take charge of today’s third-place clash between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Egyptian Pharaohs at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The playoff is set for the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, where both teams hope to finish their campaign on a positive note after narrowly missing out on a place in the final. Kick-off remains scheduled for 5 pm WAT.
Assisting Jiyed on the field will be Zakaria Brinsi, Akarkad Mostafa, and Hassani Khalil. Kenyan official Peter Waweru Kamaku will act as the fourth official. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) responsibilities will be handled by Algeria’s Lahlu Benbraham, supported by Haythem Guirat and Hamza El Fariq. Additionally, Sinko Zeli has been appointed as the referee assessor for the penultimate game of the tournament.
Nigeria heads into the match after a heartbreaking semi-final exit to host nation Morocco, losing in a tense penalty shootout. Egypt also fell short in their semi-final, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to title holders Senegal.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed his determination to wrap up the tournament on a strong note, emphasizing the importance of pride and momentum. Egypt’s coach, Hossam Hassan, shares a similar sentiment, describing the match as an opportunity to claim a podium finish and boost team morale.
